Microsoft - New innovative project
I have been working at Microsoft here in Redmond for the last six months on a variety of projects, some of which will be going live shortly. The really exciting thing about Microsoft from my position is the huge range of new tools that I have been working with; many of them new to the company and at the cutting edge of Web development.
I have been working with WPF and the fairly new xaml language both in stand alone proprietry projects and through Silverlight applications. I have learnt a good deal about the new Expression suite of tools and become very familiar with Expression Blend and Expression Design using both tools in WPF, Silverlight 1 and Silverlight 2 projects. I have even been using Visual Studio 2008, a deviation from my preferred Macromedia and Adobe tools, but a pleasant experience nonetheless.
I'll reveal more and provide some examples of my work when we go live with the projects.

Hawaii, a rain forest and 'The Big Island'
We are very excited about our Hawaiian web site. Norm Bezona, the visionary owner of Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary and horticulture expert, has created a beautiful 70 acre environment that specializes in botanical tours and education. It is truly a beautiful place. Please take a look at this Hawaiian gem through their Web site here, or you can link via the Red Anthurium image on the left.
The Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary site was built using Transitional XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), with minimal JavaScript and no Flash elements at all. This enabled the designers to write a very clean xhtml code and export all of the web site styling to CSS. This meant that download time was reduced and spare bandwidth capacity could be used on high quality imagery, without adversely affecting slower user connections. Imaginative use of a CSS fly out navigation menu further reduced file size and added to the bright, fresh appearance of the site.
